In the last quarter of the 16th century, the Coast Miwok people of Point Reyes met the first Europeans to land on the shores of Drakes Bay. Englishman Francis Drake and his crew most likely camped on these shores for six weeks while repairing the Golden Hind in 1579. Sixteen years later, a storm grounded and sank the Manila Galleon, San Agustin in the bay, while her Spanish captain, Rodrigo Cermeno, and his men watched helplessly from the shore.

Join the National Park Service as we remember the significance of these encounters and what they mean to different cultural groups today in understanding our shared history.
